Banking on Lebron: Creating Value from Season Tickets
As I prepare for my move to the city of Chicago next year for school I’ve began to worry about a couple of things. The first one being what I’m going to do with my free time when it is blistering cold outside, and second, how is a college student supposed to survive in such an expensive big city.
As a college student in the frozen Midwest, i plan to spend a lot of my time in my dorm room watching movies. In perpetration for school, I’ve been looking for good movies that I can bring with me. Recently in my search I came across a true business classic, Moneyball. For those who haven’t seen it, Moneyball is the fantastic story of Billy Beane, the assistant GM of the Oakland Athletics. The movie shows how he turned baseball into a business, and used unheard of scouting tactics to find the best players for the team. This movie shows how profitable sports can really be.
After some thinking about the profit that can be seen in sports, I had another financially genius idea.
As many have heard, former Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James is headed into the 2018-2019 NBA season as an unrestricted free agent. After the recent controversy about whether or not James is the greatest basketball player in history, I believe all NBA teams will do anything possible to add him to their roster. Considering the strong fan base of the Chicago Bulls, im sure they have a fortune, and I’m damn sure they would be willing to use it in order to get James signature for the upcoming season. That is why I will be gambling on LeBron going to Chicago next season. Before James makes the final decision to move to the Bulls, I will buy season tickets for the team, and once he makes the move I will sell these tickets. With the recent growth in NBA attendance nationwide, and the skill that James has shown the world, im sure people would pay a fortune to be able to watch LeBron play. And for the city of Chicago it will be even better. First the Blackhawks create a dynasty with the Kane and Toews duo, then Kris Bryant leads the Cubs to their first World Series win after a 108 year drought, and now this. James move to the city will grow my investment by ten times at least and hopefully more. So there it is. Another genius investment and another win for the city of Chicago.
